ICMM members complete site-level self-assessments and third-party validation of conformance with the Mining Principles. All members need to disclose the results of their self-assessments within their sustainability reports. Third-party validation follows these self-assessments. Members have the freedom to schedule self-assessments and validations as they wish, as long as they are meeting ICMM’s deadlines, and therefore different levels of disclosure will be available from different members over the next few years.

When it was published in August 2020, ICMM members committed to conform with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management for all tailings facilities classified as ‘extreme’ or ‘very high’ consequences by August 2023, and all other facilities by August 2025. This commitment galvanised immediate and sustained action by ICMM members, representing one third of the global mining industry.
